Lets Get Ourselves Prepared

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Is it too early to start thinking about National Novel Writing Month? November feels far off, but it’s only 36-days away. A length of time that could easily slip past without notice with the ramp up to Halloween and the onset of winter. And yet it is plenty of time to come up with a story idea and some sort of framework to hang that story on; a bit of prep time if you jump on it now and take advantage of it. I called Doug earlier today and mentioned to him that I was thinking that this could be the push I need to get started and the deadline I need to get me working steadily. He agreed. I asked if he was up for it this year. He seemed to think that maybe he was. So I’ve added the NaNoWriMo progress bar to the sidebar and we’re going to restart the weekly writing call in an attempt to get the creative juices flowing again. I’m feeling good about this. I really think this will be the event that’ll get me back on the writing wagon. A wagon that I really want to be on. But a wagon that I seem to keep falling off.

Did you see that we got a release date for Grand Turismo 5 in Japan? March  2010. Not much of a release date is it? I mean it’s really more of a target month. And even with that vague date there’s no talk about a release date for the U.S. or Europe. Stupid game. At least Forza is coming soon for the 360. In fact, I think they’ll have released two games in the time that GT5 has been in development. And good games at that.

Tasha’s heading east tomorrow. Whether or not Karin will be coming back with her is still up in the air. I’m going to take the opportunity to wash and wax the Triumph and go for a ride. I know, I need to get back to that side of the state to see my friends and take a look at Gary’s furnace, my brother’s boiler, and visit my kids…. but it’s such a god-awful drive. Maybe next weekend or the next or the next.

I finished listening to Gold Coast by Elmore Leonard today, actually I finished it first thing this morning and was a little annoyed that I didn’t foresee that event and have another book ready on the iPod. It was good, as everything I’ve read or listened to by Leonard has been. But the ending was unsatisfying and I would say a little weak. The whole book had an overly familiar tone and characters that seemed stock, as if he wasn’t really trying. I enjoyed it, but it’s not my favorite.

What else have I listened to lately… seems like a lot of Stephen King. After listening to the Dark Tower series (I’m thinking Father Callahan here) and then having Tasha listen to Salem’s Lot, my interest was piqued. So I listened to that. I followed it with the authors edition of The Stand. I enjoyed both stories. But here’s the thing. I haven’t ever watched the movie versions of these stories, but I’ve caught bits and pieces of them over the years, so when I’m listening to these stories I have a vague idea of what is coming and a annoying tendency to picture the actors as the characters. It’s annoying. More so because I’ve never been very impressed with the casting of the movies based on King’s work.  And I borrowed and listened to Spook Country by William Gibson from the library. A good book, but not one I’d normally listen too. I had a bit of a hard time with the beginning and figuring out what the book was about, and that feeling carried much too far into the book for my comfort. Not sure what I’ll listen to next, but I’ve got until Monday to figure it out. Later.

Let's Go Shooting

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Tonight was our class at Silver Bullet Firearms, First Steps Pistol Orientation. We walked in and they said, what do you want to shoot, and handed us a couple guns. Normally, when I go places the first thing they do isn’t hand me an assortment of firearms. Tasha chose a Beretta Neo 22LR. I took the counter girls advice and took a Ruger MK III 22LR. We grabbed some eye and ear protection and headed for the class room. We learned about firearm safety, range safety, the basic workings of a pistol and revolver, proper stance, how to choose the correct ammo, and assorted other bits of knowledge about pistols and revolvers.

Then we  headed for the firing range. They gave us a paper bag full of bullets. Eye wear on. Ear muffs on. And through the doors we went. Time to shoot us some targets. They only ran the targets out about five yards. I’m not sure if that was to make us think we’re better than we actually are or simply a good starting distance. Whatever, we were shooting guns,  hitting targets, and having fun. I think it’s safe to say that I had better results than Tasha, but I had the advantage of better eyesight and less nerves. Tasha didn’t do badly, she did quite well in fact, better than either of the other two people in our class, she’s just not the natural born killer that I am.

After the range, we went back to the class room for a lesson on gun cleaning and a Q&A session . What did I ask… I think I asked about what kind of gun to buy for a person on a budget. The answer I got was less than satisfactory; How much is your life worth. Thanks pal, I guess I’ll go spend three months salary on a pistol. I asked something else, but I don’t remember what it was, but I got the same kind of useless answer. So I didn’t ask my other questions. Then they handed out our ‘diplomas’ and our patches. So now we’re both NRA certified as beginners.

It was a long night, 5:30 – 9:15. But, it was a good class and we both had fun. Tasha is much less resistant to the idea of going through the CCW class and I think she’s actually looking forward to going and doing a bit more shooting. I myself want to go and try out a few more guns, something with a bit more kick, and get a better idea of what I’m looking to buy. I’d like to get a pistol for home defense and a set of guns to do cowboy action shooting (a rifle, a shotgun, and a set of matching revolvers), but I don’t want to buy anything until I have a bit more shooting experience.  Later.

nfl packersnfl vikingsRIt’s official, Denis is in the PS3 Madden 10 Franchise. We played a practice game tonight. I didn’t do so well. I completed 3 passes for 38 yards and ran for another 18. I had 3 balls intercepted and another 3 knocked out of the air. Fortunately, he didn’t play that much better or it could have been a real blowout. It was not a good game. Final score was, 14 Vikings @ Packers 3. Ah well, we’re calling it preseason. And anyway, I’ll whoop up on his purple ass in the regular season when it counts. Which leaves only Jay to test myself against, and that seems odd; odd only because his Chicago Bears are my first game of the season, so if we played a preseason match we’d only be turning around and playing an official match right after. I had intended for him to be my first game, but things didn’t work out that way. I guess I’ll leave it up to him.

RampantYesterdays Corn whipped up all over me in the fantasy league, beating me by better than 30-points. Everything I said yesterday still applies. No changes for me, I had nobody playing in the Monday Night game. Needless to say, he did. Final score was: Yesterdays Corn 138.8, Rampant 108.5. Here’s hoping that I get better results next weekend.

A New Kind of Football Game

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Finally the magic combination of a QuickHit Football code and a working website have come together to allow me to try out the game. I like it. It’s almost a football RPG. You’re the coach, you pick the plays and the players do their thing, you play games and earn points, after enough points you ‘level’ up and get different points that you use to improve your players. Which kinda pulls you along because you don’t want your players to suck. A word of advice, don’t pack all your points on one player, because you’ll end up with a QB that’s 3x as good as everybody else and if you’re throwing to a guy who can’t run a route or catch a ball it really doesn’t matter if you’re a superstar. And there’s no way I can see to reallocate your points once you’ve left the training screen. I’m just saying.

There is a download, so it’s not a completely online game. And there is a bit of lag, but not bad. The quarters are 3-minutes long and it takes about 20-minutes to play through a game. There’s some fun to be had here if you like football. I can see this being nice at the office, if I had an office, assuming you can put a small program on your machine. Codes still seem to be taking awhile to get, mine took four or five days to arrive, and I guess that’s because it’s still in beta. Give it a shot if it sounds good to you and then send me a friend invite. I’m arohen and my team is the Grand Rapids Lions. I haven’t played any human opponents yet, but I have played a number of the AI teams with mixed results:

GRLions

Game Results

9/21     Brooklyn Gorillas        L          21-14   B Justice

9/21     Seattle Lonewolfs       W        10-7     R Chaput

9/21     Greenwich Guppies    L          21-10   T Wooten

9/21     South Shore Pirates     W        17-14   L Schnabel

9/21     Chicago Bombers        W        24-14   M Goldsmith

In other football news, things are looking bad for my fantasy team. I’ve got two guys who scored me no points and one guy who managed to get negative points. I’m losing by 8 points. And my opponent has two players playing tonight. So my record will be 1-1-0 by tomorrow morning. Congrats to my opponent, Yesterdays Corn.

Denis has picked up his copy of Madden 10 and I expect that he’ll be in the league sometime tomorrow. Looks like this thing might actually happen.

And last but not least, today is Doug’s birthday. Doug, do you still remember high school? Twenty-three years ago? We’ve had a good run, happy birthday.

Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Took the car in to Midas this morning. I’ve been meaning to take it somewhere for a while, and now that we have Tasha’s car here, this morning seemed as good a time as any. The thing has over 86,000 miles on it now and my list of things that need attention was long; mushy brakes, squealing belt, front tires and alignment, tune-up, and oil change. So I was hoping to get out of there for $600, but expecting it to be more like $1000. This is what happens when you wait too long for these repairs. So I was expecting to pay some cash. Which I was okay with.

I took it to Midas because, well, they just seemed like they were equipped to do everything I wanted done. They gave my car the thorough once over and brought back a slightly expanded list of things that needed attention. I pretty much expected that there were things I hadn’t noticed yet, so no surprise there. In the end, the oil was changed, the other fluids were topped off and the car given a tune up, the fuel injectors  cleaned, the battery was replaced, the brakes were checked (and were still good, but needed to be bled and adjusted to fix the pedal), both serpentine belts were replaced, the front end was aligned, we got a new set of spark plugs and wires, and we replaced all four tires (a nice matching set). It was a lot of work and I didn’t expect to see the car again until Monday afternoon, but they had it ready for us by 4:30 pm. It cost me just shy of $1,200, but we want to keep this car for another year-and-a-half or maybe two before we get another and just going on what I’ve had to do to this car in the past, probably this’ll be the last repair I do to it. So it was more than I thought it’d be, but not too much so and I feel confident in the work. It’s all good.

We got the all the laundry washed, folded, and put away, despite the fact that our new (or rather most recent, this thing may be 50 years old) washing machine seems to leak slightly. Which is very nice, considering the last one didn’t spin out anymore. We can deal with a slight leak for a weekend. Tasha did her house stuff, went to the store, and then made some very good nacho’s for dinner (after freaking out about the cost of the car repair). Apparently, stress makes her a wiz in the kitchen.

nfl packersnfl_lionsRMy Packers and I played my unofficial, preseason game against Kevin and his Lions team on the PS3 earlier. And the Packers (28) came out on top of the Lions (14). Jay was in the background, probably sitting on Kevin’s couch, and I like to think he was watching film and wondering how he’ll ever be able to beat this powerhouse that is Green Bay with his lowly Bears. He was hard to hear, but the fear and trepidation came through loud and clear. And Denis? rumor has it that he’ll pick up his copy of the game tomorrow. Not that it matters, he’s not very good at sports games or any games for that matter. I have no fear of his weak skills.

Oh yeah, I must acknowledge that Kevin has joined the Franchise. No more flack for him.

I’m off to play some Burnout with Denis on the PS3. Perhaps Jay and Kevin will be around later to join. So many games, so little time.

Later.

The Machines of Da Vinci

Friday, September 18th, 2009

We went to the Grand Rapids Public Museum tonight after dinner at Mojo’s. The museum is having a Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit called, Machines in Motion. It’s a bunch of machines built from the drawings and designs of Leonardo  Da Vinci; the tank, the helicopter, the glider, etc… I think there were about fourty of them in total, not all of them to full scale. It was very interesting. Especially when you think that this wall all done around the late 1400’s. My favorite was the wooden bicycle, but the one I was most impressed with was the ingenuous ratcheting machine with the wheels that went in opposite directions. I’m sure it has a name, but it escapes me at this moment. It’s amazing what he did with wood, rope, glue, and just a touch of metal.

The rest of the museum was kinda hit or miss for me. I enjoyed the 6-foot globe, though the spinning mechanism was broken and I couldn’t really see much of North America and none of Australia. There was a 20-foot high bias relief map of Michigan that was made in the 1940’s that was cool. And a blow up of Kent county from that same time that was neat. I liked all the animal habitat exhibits, but then I always like that stuff. It’s cool to see how big a moose or elephant is without having to actually encounter one. The golden eagle was very impressive in size. The Streets of Old G.R. was kinda cool, but I’ve seen that sort of thing before. The Egyptian exhibit was a small thing of not much note.  I really didn’t give a crap about the furniture stuff, and there was a lot of furniture stuff. I recognize that Grand Rapids is some sort of furniture city, but I don’t care. We skipped the Newcomers exhibit entirely, a big who cares. Neither of us had a dollar so we skipped the Carousel, but we’ll probably hit it next time we go. And we will go back, because we want to go to the planetarium when they’re not showing Pink Floyd.

A bit later in the evening I spent some time with City of Heroes. They’ve released their latest patch, which allows you to change the color of your powers. Which is the kind of shit I dig. So I spent a couple hours tweaking my heroes colors. I like it. Too bad none of my friends are playing this game because I still think it’s pretty cool. Not that I really have a lot of game playing going on right now. I know it sounds like that last statement is a lie, what with the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, various PC mmo’s, and the fantasy football. But really, I haven’t been spending much time playing games. I think I’m just wanting to be swept away by something. And so far the games haven’t done it. But I keep trying.

One other thing of note…. Jay has signed in for the Franchise. So I’ve got to acknowledge that and stop giving him grief. Kevin and Denis…. yeah, they still get the grief.

Later.

Just Another Day In The Life

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I may have to take back what I was saying about Quick Hit Football. I signed up a few weeks ago and they let me register and make a team. Last night when I tried to log in, they told me I had no account. I have the email. I have an account. To make matters worse. I’ve applied for a new account but have yet to see a code in my email. They’re not making me a fan. I’d like to try it, but apparently they don’t want me too.

Still nobody in my PS3 Madden Franchise but me. No excuse for Kevin and Jay. Denis, well, he won’t even pick his copy up until Sunday, so I’ll give him a little slack. But not much. I see that NHL 10 is out now and getting good reviews, I bet the guys are all over that, and if they are… I may make them wait. Bwah ha ha ha…

Our washing machine stopped working last night. Actually it’s been acting up for a couple days. The repair man says he’ll have a new one for us tomorrow. I’m down to my last uniform, good thing I don’t need them for the weekend.

I’ve been doing some research for a novel. I think I’m going to have to give up on Malach, I just don’t think I’m ready to write that story. It needs to stew for a bit longer on the back burner of my brain. But I want to write. So I’ve been thinking of ideas. And I’ve got one. Just need to figure a few more things out before I put words to paper.

Later.

Let's Talk Pigskin

Green-Bay-Packers-Helmet-2Video game football is back. The 1st and Ten league has been reborn on the PS3. Jay, Kevin, Denis, and myself are taking up the Online Franchise mode in Madden NFL 10. In order to decrease the number of games against CPU Opponents we’ve taken teams in the NFC North. Jay will be heading the Chicago Bears, Kevin the Detroit Lions, Denis has picked the Minnesota Vikings, and that left me (last pick, last choice) with the Green Bay Packers. It’d be great to get more into this thing, so if you have a PS3 and Madden NFL 10 we’d love to have you join us. Provided of course that you’re not a dick. I don’t want to play games with a dick. Sorry. But at least I’m honest. Now if I could just get these other guys to sign up online so I can get started with the trades and what not.

med_12onnIn my fantasy football league I’m happy to report that Rampant (my team) beat RUNT (my brother’s team) in the season opener. Final score was Rampant 119.2, RUNT 111.0. I told him I was going to beat him and I’m glad I wasn’t just blowing smoke. It’d be a touch embarrassing to get beat by my baby brother. Points-wise we both ended up in the middle of the league. I’m feeling pretty good about this thing, but I don’t expect to win it and take home the big money.

In other fake football news, I found this online game by some of the folks that worked on Madden and worked on the 2K teams. Quick Hit Football. It’s a coach style game, or at least that’s what they’re saying. I haven’t actually played it yet, but I am looking forward to it. My team is the Grand Rapids Lions and my user name is arohen, per usual.

Did you watch the Saints beat up on the Lions this weekend? It was rough, but I did like what I was seeing from the Lions offense. The defense… not so much.

The Big Day, Raffle Saturday

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

2009 Chevrolet CorvetteSee that picture. A beautiful blue, 2009 Chevrolet Corvette. That’s the corvette I didn’t win in the 28th Annual Grand Valley Corvette Association Inc. Raffle. The drawing was today. I also did not win the money for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place. But what I did have was 2-months of fantasies about winning. I bought 3 tickets and gave me a 1 in 1500 or better chance of walking away with the car. Not great odds, but way better than winning the lottery. I guess I’m stuck saving my pennies and buying my own…. but then again, there’s always next year’s raffle.

Today, Tasha and I went to the other side of the state to pick up the cavalier and have a little cook out with the family. There was a little stress involved in getting there; a missed turn, a series of plan changes in route, the usual chaos that ensues when we go to that side of the state. In the end we grabbed the car and then split and tried to get everything done as quickly as possible. Tasha took my car and picked up Karin and then went to her moms. I took the cavalier and picked up Tyler and Zachary and went to Tasha’s moms place. It was a lot of time in the car, but neither of us was done with time in the car for the day.

Let’s see, so we’ve got Tasha and me, the dog, Karin, Tyler, and Zachary as our contributions to the party. Kirra and mom were there when we got there. Candy and Matt arrived shortly thereafter. Kari showed up, as did Marcy, and Tammi brought a couple of her kids and her mother. It was a nice get together. The kids huddled up in front of the TV and avoided us adult folks, the adults gathered on the deck. We had hotdogs and burgers and all the other stuff you expect at one of these outings. By the end everybody was on the deck and it was a good time. Always nice to see everybody.

I tried to get Tyler to come back with me, but he has responsibilities at home. So I took both the boys home around 7pm. Wasn’t much of a visit, but I don’t see them much and a short visit is better than no visit. After dropping them off the dog and I headed  home. So much driving. Tasha called and said she’s on her way home, but I don’t expect her until probably 2:00 am.

And that was my Saturday. Later.

Mark and Dawn and Pete

Friday, September 11th, 2009

We were supposed to be at a birthday party tonight, but we forgot until we were nearly in Grand Haven. Oops. Our pals, Mark and Dawn, rented a RV and have been trying out the RVing lifestyle. Tonight they’re in Grand Haven at the campground so we went and saw them. Walk on the beach. Have some  drinks. Actually interact with people on this side of the state.

We got there and were a little annoyed that we had to pay the park toll booth to visit our friends, but I guess it’s the way things are. But the RV campground was crazy… basically a parking lot on the beach full of giant RV’s and lots of wandering people. Even stranger was the way everything went dark and quiet at 10:00 pm on a Friday night. Maybe there’s a rule. I don’t know, I was just there to visit.

We were visiting with our friends when there was a knock on the door. Just a ‘neighbor’ stopping by to check out the RV and say hi. Mark invited him in for a beer and he came in with the second invite. Which was good, because it was a little weird talking to him through the screen door. Guy’s name is Pete and I must say he’s quite a character. A real talker, a story teller kind of guy, the kind of guy who has done it all. I think I have a bit of a man-crush on him. Turns out he’s from right down the street in Wyoming, MI. He’s a Vietnam Veteran. A cowboy action shooter. A retired firefighter. A Harley Davidson rider. He’s worked with both the Silver Bullet folks (where we’re going for shooting lessons) and the Rockford Sportsman’s Club (where I want to do the cowboy shooting thing). He’s flown planes and parachuted out of them. He seems like a really good guy. He talked about cigars with Tasha, RV’s with Mark, liveaboards with me, dog’s with Dawn, and was just generally entertaining. It was nice to meet him and I’m hopeful that we can parlay this into a friendship.

After Pete left, the four of us walked down the beach and out onto the pier. The ladies were a little tipsy but it was nice. We visited a bit more and then when we went to leave we found that we’d been padlocked into the campground. After some searching Tasha and Dawn found a way to get out from the nearby fisherman’s lot and we were able to slip away into the night and go home.

Not bad for six dollars. It was a good night.
